The “Fancy Shanghai” Circular Dome Show was officially launched at the Zero Meter Hall of the Oriental Pearl TV Tower in Shanghai on the evening of 12th October. Multiple media from Shanghai felt the pulse of the world-class circular dome show. With the world’s leading digital technology, the show connected the facade image with the dome image. 30 2K HD projectors presented an extremely splendid visual sensation of 20,000 lumen and an projected area of 2,500 ㎡ which is tantamount to the size of 4 tennis courts, in conjunction with a multichannel surround system comprised of approximately 80 loudspeakers, to deliver a 360° immersive visual and audio experience... The wonderful performances of the 5 cute IP images - Dongdong, Fangfang, Mingming, Zhuzhu, and Tata, gave the audience a breathtaking, thrilling, miraculous, and romantic visual and audio feast that included traveling beyond time and space in Shanghai and adventuring in cities. The show is put on 3 times per night, with each lasting 12 minutes. The open panoramic viewing environment allows audience sitting in different positions to have different sensations.

The project was delivered by Shanghai Yaoying ACE Company, in conjunction with China’s leading special video effects team Motion Magic, offering great audio engineering support to the world-class multimedia projection show. Advanced Communication Equipment (International) Company Ltd. (ACE) supplied the audio outfit and put forward the overall system design, and devised the multichannel surround system based on the features of the venue.

To create an immersive multimedia space in better coordination with the colourful visual effects of the Circular Dome Show, a 360° surround system was installed at the Zero Meter Hall, consisting of nearly 80 loudspeakers.

The audio system could enable the sound to have seamless and free movement in the 360° dome space in perfect match with the video images, and create more abundant acoustic image positioning effects to offer the audience better visual and audio sensations.

Vice President of ACE Mr. CAP Rongzhen was at the site participating in and guiding the audio system design.

As a matter of fact, it’s extremely difficult to create such an audio system at the Zero Meter Hall. First, as the load-bearing limit of the Tower made it difficult to suspend large-sized loudspeakers in many places, the design principle of multi-point sound pressure coverage was adopted, with the loudspeakers evenly distributed, to allow the sound cover the entire space, which made it possible for the audience to enjoy the best original sound from every angle. Second, as the sound clarity would be greatly affected by such acoustic defects as reflections, reverberations, and acoustic focus in such a huge arc space with the diameter reaching about 60 meters and the height about 30 meters, we presented the perfect ultimate sound effects that included clear voice and varied surround effects following careful measurement, design, and debugging, as well as a dozen of days of meticulous synchronous production and mixing. And given the relative independence of the audio system from the video system, we chose the best solution and an alternative solution after several tests, to achieve accurate synchronization of the two systems and perfect switch to the alternative solution in case of any failure.

The equipment used on site: BSS BLU-806 × 4 sets, BSS BOB2 × 8 sets, BSS 4BV-BLK-EU, CROWN XTi4002 × 6 sets, JBL CBT 70J × 6 sets, JBL CBT 70JE × 6 sets, and others.

With the patent-pending Constant Beamwidth Technology at the heart, the JBL CBT series can “deliver even coverage in the broad beamwidth to ensure sound consistency across the frequency spectrum at the venue”. The CBT series has a range of products, such as the CBT50LA-1, the CBT100LA-1, the CBT200LA-1, the CBT70J-1, The CBT70JE-1, and the CBT1000, which can address a broad range of applications that include performance spaces, transit centers, lecture halls, board/meeting rooms, retail stores, houses of worship, courtrooms, theme parks, lobbies, cinemas, and any other application requiring a speaker with discrete appearance, excellent sound, and superb pattern control.
