Training on site

The 3-day MA Masters Class (Beijing) was jointly held by Advanced Communication Equipment (International) Company Ltd. (ACE) and MA WORKSHOP (Germany) at the Taihu Choreography Arts Center of the National Center for the Performing Arts in Beijing on 19th to 21st September 2019.

Our old friend, the well-noted Australian lighting designer Mr. Paul Collison, was again invited to act as the trainer. Mr. Paul Collison had provided lighting solutions to multiple big events, such as the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2010 Shanghai World Expo, the X Factor Australia, The Voice Australia, the Young Talent Time, and the 2019 World’s Got Talent, with very extensive experience in lighting design and programming. In this training class, he shared the programming and his own way of working and thinking on a detailed basis.

Also, Mr. Luke Chikkala from MA Lighting’s office in Singapore introduced the brand new hardware of grandMA3 and the functions and features of its latest version. Mr. ZHANG Wei, Manager of Lighting Department of ACE Beijing and General Agent for MA China, accompanied him throughout the introduction.

Training in retrospect

Mr. Paul Collison shared his ideas about closer and more harmonious ways of integrating lighting with videos, choreography, sound, the stage property and delivering an explicit and perfect workflow by the means of great planning and logicality. He also talked about the experience and choices in each step of the whole process from starting a project to finishing the performance, and took the 2019 Eurovision Song Contest in Australia as an example to demonstrate the concept of lighting design throughout the entire project. There were fervent discussions between the trainees and Mr. Paul Collison who answered many questions.

Basic training for gMA2: in what status can the real-time connection be used, user content and setting, meaning of different kinds of presets, network settings, the use and setting of MA 3D, and how to use the time code; the significance and setting of tracking in the cue sequence, how to use the external trigger, the clone, and the macro, and how to replace the lighting pattern in a complete show file. Mr. Paul Collison taught many skills and techniques, receiving great support from the trainees.

Mr. Luke Chikkala introduced the brand new hardware of grandMA3 and the updates and functions of its latest version, whose brand new interface and powerful functions make it more convenient and fast to programme.

The trainees worked very hard at manual operations, even in intervals, and Mr. Paul Collison and ACE staff also provided coaching.
