Information

CHINA: Completed in 2001, Tsinghua University’s sports complex has been the host of many important sporting events including the 2008 Summer Olympics and the 21st World University Games in 2001, as well as university functions such as seminar opening and closing ceremonies. The complex at the leading Beijing university has recently been renovated, with Chinese AV distributor, ACE, supplying the technical package in addition to handling cabling and installing.

ACE carried out research before beginning the renovation to understand the various uses of the stadium and workflow of the staff. Accordingly, top floor computer and control rooms were retained and a control room added on the first floor, along with an operations room for lessons, meetings, and smaller sports competitions.

The entire audio system operates on a Dante network, from the sound source to the amplifiers, ensuring that delay is extremely low, and the routing is flexible and convenient, as well as providing a backup function. It also provided savings when it came to labour and cabling costs in updating the old venue.

Harman's Blu Link network system has been provided alongside the Dante system, transmitting multiple signals between equipment to further ensure the security and stability of the system. Redundant analogue signals remain in the system to ensure that the signal transmission is foolproof.

Two completely independent Soundcraft Vi2000 consoles were installed in each of the two control rooms. These are backed up to each other, with the mixed signal output to two BSS BLU806DA digital processors also backed up to each other. The main and backup outputs then enter Crown DCIN Series digital power amplifiers, where the master and backup signal can be selected and sent to the speakers. The BSS BLU806 DA1 handles the Dante/Blu Link analogue signal distribution as well as the processing of the sound field, while a TASCAM ML 32D is used for digital and analogue switching backup.

Two symmetric amplifier rooms each have a BLU806 for central signal processing, connected via Blu Link to the DCi-N amplifiers to form a ring circuit. Two BLU806 processors are also connected via Dante network to the Soundcraft Vi Console, TASCAM ML-32 converter and Shure Axient Digital and ULXD wireless mic systems. A TASCAM SS-CDR250N two-channel CD/solid-state recorder connected to the console is used for recording audio sources.

The central main speaker cluster consists of six JBL PD6322-64 three-way full-range loudspeakers mounted above the central LED screen. The outer distributed delay-fill system comprises 10 JBL AM7315-64 speakers, which are flown underneath the catwalk on both sides.

The field area is covered by two JBL PD6212/95 and two JBL PD6212/66 loudspeakers, which are flown under the LED screen, while there is also a portable field system comprising JBL VTX A8 dual 8-inch line array speakers.

ACE has set different modes for various applications including conferences, teaching, sporting activities and other events, which can be quickly switched from a customised control panel to select an appropriate speaker combination for the application and the audience area.
