How can we make digital consoles as intuitive as analog mixing consoles?

The reason why we choose digital console is because it has large channels to mix and is powerful in expansion. But at the same time, it is confronted with the problem of how to efficiently deal with so many channels and mixing.

When using an analog console, operators would label every channel to remind themselves of its function. But such approach doesn't work when it comes to a digital console, as it has the layer turning function. But thanks to Soundcraft's engineers, the "labels" are ingeniously combined with the "layer turning" to deliver a set of user-friendly designs.

Digital Labeling

First, we smartly turn "labeling" into digital labels! For a Soundcraft Si Impact digital console, on each channel, there is a high-brightness color LCD screen, which displays the name of the channel (user-edited) and a corresponding color. For example, if multiple microphones are inputting, mic1, mic2, mic3…would be displayed on the LCD screen; if there are inputs from stereo audio devices, there would be line L, line R on the screen; and if there are signals coming from computers or players, then there would be PC, CD, etc. on the screen.

Apart from displaying channel names, with the meters of channel signal level and dynamic status of the channel put into the LCD screen, it also gives a real “at-a-glance” information.

Custom State

FaderGlow function

The LCD screen on every channel is not enough. Soundcraft Si Impact digital console has the Soundcraft FaderGlow™ (a fader lighting technology), which illuminates the fader track in different colours to provide at-a-glance status information on precisely what the fader is controlling, including aux buses (yellow), group buses (green), matrix buses (orange), FX sends (light blue), VCA groups (deep blue), and even the graphic EQ (red) that's available on every bus.

As these channels are on different layer pages in default state which requires layer turning to switch, Soundcraft Si Impact digital console can customize the channel layout on the same layer. In this way, you would be able to operate input, output, effector, VCA, etc. on the same layer differentiated by colours, which is both intuitive and simple.

But do you think that’s all?

Soundcraft Si Impact digital console has a touch screen on its central position. You don’t have to rely on it too much as you do live mixing. But you’ll really need it while setting up systems and channels, editing channel “labels”, or getting the accurate numbers of all parameters. And when you’re using it, you would feel as though it’s just as convenient as operating your cellphone.  Soundcraft
