What is VCA?

First of all, VCA is short for Voltage Control Amplifier.
But how does it work?Consoles with VCA function have the VCA unit in each input channel whose signal levels can be controlled by either the fader or the VCA signal. After arranging XXX input channel to a VCA group, push up the VCA fader and the level of the input channels in the group would rise. (But it the input channel faders won't move in reality as it's just the voltage controlled.) In other words, you don't have to use many fingers to operate as the VCA will do.

What's the difference between the VCA and the group?

The VCA looks like the same as the bus group, but they have completely different principles and applications. For bus groups, signals of each channel are mixed and controlled by group faders and output the mixed signals through group output port. But VCA groups just control the level of each channel that's been arranged to the VCA groups, with the signals of each channel that's been arranged to the VCA groups still being independent instead of being mixed. Bus group is a single output bus, while VCA groups don't have them.

VCA Applications

We would often have to control several dozens of faders in a live performance. But VCA can help us solve the problem. For example, in a live performance, the audio sources such as bands, chorus, male and female solo performers, and hosts, will have their volume proportions changed as the performance goes on, with a singing solo being the highlight at one time and an instrument solo at another. So if there's no VCA groups, it would be hard for the operator to simultaneously operate multiple discrete channels with bare hands to achieve volume balance. But with VCA, by arranging these audio sources to 4 VCA groups, the operator would just need to control 4 VCA faders to get a volume balance, in a way that saves too many finger operations and improves efficiency.

It's true that VCA does offer a lot of convenience in functionality and application for us to mix, but not all mixing consoles have VCA groups. Middle-and high-end digital consoles would often have VCA. The Soundcraft Si Impact is a powerful digital console that has 8 VCA groups, definitely your dream product for a live performance.

What's equally special about the Soundcraft Si Impact is the following design:

The Legendary British sound

Soundcraft founder Graham Blythe's acclaimed microphone preamps and "British" equalizer cemented the position of the Si Impact in today's Soundcraft mixing consoles.

Going beyond analogue control

Combining the ONE Touch Easy Mix” (tOTEM) unique controlling features and FaderGlow, Soundcraft combines analogue workflow with digital flexibility. FaderGlow illuminates the fader track in different colours to provide at-a-glance status information on precisely what the fader is controlling.

Legendary effects & dynamics

Legendary dbx dynamics, industry-standard BSS Graphic Equalisers, and professional Lexicon effectors combine to greatly enhance the capacity of Si Impact to process signals.

Put your I/O where you need it

With built-in connectivity for an optional Soundcraft Stagebox, Si Impact lets you put your I/O where you need it.

Pristine audio direct to your DAW

Si Impact makes recording quick and easy with superb quality, built-in 32-in/32-out USB recording and playback. And also provide a license for Ableton Live Lite 9.

Remote mixing with your iPad

The mix power of Si Impact is accessible from anywhere in the venue, via the Soundcraft remote iPad app.
