To commemorate the 86th anniversary of the "9•18" incident, the national opera Sparks of Fire, a China National Art Fund's 2017 large-scale stage dramas and works roll-funded project, was staged at Shengjing Grand Theatre on the night of September 18. It also served as the Opening Show of the 8th "National Vocal Music Forum" jointly sponsored by National Vocal Music Art Research Association of China, Shenyang Conservatory of Music, China Conservatory of Music and Shanghai Conservatory of Music, and the second “National Conservatories Vocal Music Art Exchange Exhibition” organized by the Shenyang Conservatory of Music.
Sparks of Fire in the form of national opera aims to commemorate the history of the War of Resistance Against Japan, to praise the heroic deeds of Northeast United Resistance Army bravely fight against Japanese invaders, and to eulogize the unyielding spirit and indomitable perseverance of Chinese nation. It is the first opera after the founding of New China, the first opera on anti-Japanese theme, also the first opera about the Northeast United Resistance Army.
In the opera performance, a total of 46 channels instrument microphones were used for Symphony Orchestra, 8 channels stage lifting microphones for chorus sound pickup, and 64 wireless channels for actor sound pickup. 2 digital mixers were used for control, including 1 Soundcraft Vi5000 mixer for voice control, recording and main PA sound synthesis, and the other mixer for Symphony Orchestra microphones sound pickup.
A great amount of microphone pick-up sound brought huge challenges to the installation, configuration, commissioning and performing control of the system. Through connecting wired and wireless microphones to a fiber-connected stage box, the installation problem was solved. The stage box transmitted signals back to the mixers via the primary and standby fiber. And the problem of system configuration was solved by the convenient and easy connection of Soundcraft Vi5000 Digital Mixer. Each input channel can be configured with the input interface by simple clicks.
The numerous microphone operations were merged and rearranged through the user-defined fader function of Soundcraft Vi5000 Digital Mixer combine with multi channels VCA. Finally, the mixer control interface was configured by the user-defined fader operating interface function to the most friendly and convenient state to the operators.
The first 5 channels are for microphones, and the other 3 channels for VCA grouping.
In addition, the channel mapping function can support two-person operating. In drama and opera performances, the main operator need to control many faders at the same time, and other operations should be completed by the second operator. By clicking the corresponding channels on the main screen, they can be mapped to the right-most control area, where the second operator can make changes without disturbing the main operator.
Type and channel mode can be adjusted freely through 32 mix output buses
As for the output section, Vi5000 support 24 input source matrix output with its flexible bus settings, making the output configuration more flexible. This time, the input signals were grouped by type and delivered matrix output finally. There were many other output needs such as live broadcast and recording in addition to the main PA output. After configuring the signals, the advantage that one output bus can support multiple output interfaces became apparent.

In this performance, the sound reinforcement system adopted JBL VTX series V20 Line Array Full-range Speakers with S25 Subwoofers. The speakers were placed on the floor, easy and quick to determine the angles. JBL VTX M20 dual 10” speakers were used as stage monitor for the actors.
Power amplification system used Crown IT-4*3500HD and IT-12000HD Digital Amplifier. And the associated software HiQnet Performance Manager were used to rapidly produce and adjust the amplifier program, and monitor the system in the performance.
