Chinese Story: The 12 Chinese Zodiac Signs, a new musical dance choreographed by the China Oriental Performance Arts Group CO.LTD , was performed at the National Centre for the Performing Arts lately.
The dance adopted new art forms to tell Chinese stories, which is a new subject for the Group. The gala, directed by Shen Chen, which took inspiration from Ten Thousand Horses Galloping Ahead, a dance he choreographed for the Chinese spring festival evening gala broadcast live on the CCTV, featured 12 Chinese zodiac signs in China's folk culture.
The gala told the story of the Chinese nation, combining multiple elements, from blending folk dance with classical and modern dances to integrating the Chinese percussion music with that of the rest of the world, to present to the audience not only China's but also global arts, in a way that demonstrated the director's choreographic philosophy in line with the trend of the times. The combination of the profound traditions of the Chinese nation and some lively moments offered a live feast for the eyes.
12 dance programmes featuring the zodiac ran through the whole event. For example, The Tiger Shouting in the Woods featured a tiger jumping with the intense drumming from The Ox Fighting the Tiger that showed its power, wisdom and grit; The Goats Hiding in the Mountains featured lovely goat herds demonstrating their humble and polite characters in orchid-dotted mountains; The Monkey at Dawn featured a monkey rising up to transform itself into a real matchless hero; and The Rat Causing Turmoil in the Heaven featured five rats personalized as military comedians in Peking Opera wreaking havoc in the Heaven.
A variety of percussion instruments produced from all over the world were played as interludes, presenting a scene of four seasons. The repeat of a 12-year cycle of the zodiac undergoing 4 seasons in each year implies 12 characters a man has to cultivate throughout his life.
In the lighting video control system applied to the event, grandMA2 Fullsize, a brand that has been imitated by many but surpassed by none, was used as the lighting console, dot2 core, a new series MA introduced in 2015, as video control, and Arkaos, a Belgian brand, as video server, ensuring the lighting and video systems reaching their maximum stability and flexibility.
In terms of lamps, Clay Paky’s latest CLAYPAKY SCENIUS UNICO four-in-one moving light was used. As the latest high-end model of Clay Paky, it has a customized 1400W Osram lok-it lamp, whose luminance (1400W) and CRI (>95) are both higher than its counterparts. In addition, it also has a 5°- 55°linear zoom which far expands its applications, an advanced automatic focus tracking system which could maximize the effective luminance of pattern projection. At the same time, powerful ultra-silent axial fans were used to reduce the noise to the largest extent, offering exceptional experience for users, performers and the audience.
Thanks to the musical dance, the audience enjoyed a fantastic event that witnessed the sparkling Chinese zodiac culture that has a time-honoured history and endless resilience.
