On November 8, 2016, the BILLY LYNN’S LONG HALFTIME WALK directed by Ang Lee was premiered in the Oriental IMAX Theater of Shanghai Film Art Center (“SFC”) and for the first time, the Christie Mirage 4KLH RGB laser projection system was used. It is the second movie theater in China mainland after Beijing that has the 3D/4K/28fL/120-frame projection ability and there are only five theaters of its kind in the world.
SFC with its DOLBY ATMOS sound playback system is the only theater in the world that surpasses the requirements of Ang Lee.

Trial projection of the film
Lee required a projection brightness of 28FL while the usual level for a 3D film was no less than 6FL. A 6P projector was needed in order to achieve the required brightness and high definition. It also required the use of 24 laser modules. The super-advanced SFC Oriental IMAX Theater thus provided 8 more modules to meet the technical needs.

4K/3D/120-frame means the use of two 4K projectors to deliver 120 fps/eye playback format in 3D mode. Unlike the ordinary 3D theaters, the use of two projectors may minimize resolution and brightness loss to ensure the best viewing quality.

Due to the special nature of the film and to ensure that the sound reproduction equipment can normally decode the ATMOS audio track, ACE got early and fully prepared by using a Doremi Show Vault 2K4 to transmit audio to the DOLBY CP850. The CP850 used 8 x AES to connect to the audio output of the main film server 7th Sense. This enables synchronous projection of the two servers based on time code via the CP850 without the need for additional settings. Based on CP850’s powerful computing core, it may seamlessly and automatically switch to 5.1 movie tracks in the 7th Sense server when incomplete ATMOS audio track is detected.

SFC uses Crown+JBL, which is a typical combination for a playback system, to achieve the “all-round immersive” effects. The THX-compliant main speaker JBL 5742 allows accurate restoration of sound reinforcement for the main screen. The low frequency surround sound fill subwoofer JBL 4642A provides large dynamic surges of low frequency sound. The surround sound speaker JBL AM 7215/5215 with its special patented horn ensures uniform coverage of more than 1,300 seats. In addition, the two DAC3201 for digital-to-analog conversion of the DOLBY CP850 provide up to 60 independent sound channels. Hall 1 uses up to 50 channels to allow wonderful interpretations of the film.
